      “I'm In Love."

It's Valentines day and I'm in love.  One week into the team training camp at Cycling Holiday Spain http://www.cyclingholidayspain.co.uk,
25hrs of riding, however many miles and vertical meters clocked I don't mind admitting that I'm beginning to feel a little sleepy.
Maybe it is this fatigue which has caused me to fall in love with a rival team members wife but more likely I'm just happy to be here.

Things we do in the off-season n.2: Testing

RAMP Tests for half the team yesterday in Staveley at The Body Rehab on the Wattbike, a super dupper turbo training device able to log power all around the pedalling motion.

The RAMP Testing is fairly simple in principle. Warm up 20 mins, start at an baseline resistance and cadence, then every minute increase and sustain pedalling cadence to increase power by 20W until you can no longer sustain the effort. Good baseline for setting training zones accurately but also see where a rider is in term of own training and fitness prior to the racing season ahead.

Many thanks to Graham Theobald for the expert advice and encouragements to get every ounces of power out of our riders.

Need some advice to set training zones? The Body Rehab in Staveley can help. They're also equipped with altitude trainer to simulate training at high altitude.

Team Ride to Biketreks in Ambleside

      • Autopost

With the team roster for 2012 recently established, team captain Nic Bertrand thought it would be a good idea to organise a team ride to our title sponsor - Biketreks in picturesque Ambleside deep in the heart of the Lake District. This was an opportunity for riders to begin to get to know each other better, for a relaxed but long distance training run to get some all important base miles in and most importantly for our new riders to visit Biketreks to meet the shop staff and get a better understanding of who and what they will be helping to publicise throughout 2012 as well as seeing first hand the sort of excellent service, advice and facilities that Biketreks have on offer to customers.

A foggy, chilly but dry day greeted a large cohort of the team with some notable exceptions who were sorely missed. In attendance were Jonny Cregeen - the Manx Missile MK2, this version reaches a higher altitude much quicker than the original! Callum, Kieren, Johnny D, Chris and the only rider to develop tendonitis of the jaw through talking too much in cold weather Sandy Lockett. Sorely missed today were Gaz, Connor (who made an appearance at the shop nursing a dodgy knee - get well soon Connor) James, Jonny Evans and last but very much not least team captain Nic Bertrand, another unfortunate victim of a dodgy mid winter knee injury - goes without saying how frustrated the team's lynch-pin was at not being part of this ride.

With a route that stretched from Lancaster up into the Lakes to Ambleside the riders took regular turns at the front to keep the pace 'healthy' and with a nice even amount of 6 riders there was plenty of opportunity for riders to swap formation and chat to each other. With a combined age that would make Joan Rivers nervous Johnny D and Chris played the joint role of patron - dictating the pace, making sure no one was left behind at any point and trying (without much success) to keep the intermittent heckling to a minimum.

With the team arriving at Biketreks, Keith the shop's official fashion expert stoked up the espresso machine and served up some great cappuccinos while riders chatted to Mike, Colin, Piotr and shop manager Sarah who where all running the shop that day. Unfortunately Andy Stephenson shop owner and Biketreks visionary was not about - hopefully he was out on his bike somewhere, it was too good a day not to be!

A long undulating ride along the opposite side of Windermere going south towards Newby Bridge provided varying pace and a chance for more chat, as Chris turned for home towards Barrow it was just the young guns left with Johnny D representing the over twenty fives, alright - he was also representing the over thirty fives, but we'll gloss over that! A big climb into Grange Over Sands followed by a long flat fast ride into a direct headwind all the way back to Lancaster had the team riders switch into 'quietly committed' mode and it was time for the banter to stop. With the remaining riders all doing their turns on the front it was a tired but fast moving group that arrived home with over 80 miles on the clock, some good base miles in the legs and plans to do another team ride hopefully with a full cohort next time.

November.  This is the time of the year when training plans for the road 2012 season effectively start, training becomes structured once again and The Sufferfest training videos get a good workout (as a figure of speech).

A good proportion of the Biketreks Racing team joined their 2nd claim club Lune RCC in Lancaster for a ride over local Bowland hills. This is a change from previous years that had the A group and B groups riding Howard's legbreaker run over Cross O'Greet. A varied group of 12 riders featuring 3 new riders including Biketreks RT’s new recruits James Dunlop (former Herbalife-Wheelbase) and Jonny Cregeen (Isle of Man Microgaming.com) went over Harris End, Oakenclough, Waddington Fell, Trough of Bowland and Jubilee Tower. All in all a good steady ride was enjoyed by all, one that marks the start of winter training for many competitive riders. For more information about the Lune RCC winter club rides consult their website at http://www.lunercc.org.uk - All welcome!

      3 peaks cyclocross 2011

After about a month of deliberation*, I have put my name down for the 3 peaks cyclocross on 1st of July, day of pre-entries starting. John and Gaz but also Biketreks Supremo Andy will hopefully be racing. John's preparation started today with an off-road ride over Salter Fell. I opted to kick off the celebrations with a hike to the top of Barbon Fell. On the bike or off the bike, Barbondale is special. Perfect day for it too. This is the first in a series of posts that will build up to the race itself on 25th of September.

      A racing cyclist weekly routine

      • Autopost

Yes, a few races are already under the belt but with the clocks having moved forward, the racing season is about to properly kick off. Evening crits are starting. Evening Club TTs have already started. The routine of many racing cyclists is about to shift between getting conditioned to race to ensuring there are enough rest/recovery days in the schedule.

So, here is what will become typical week until September:

      • Monday: easy recovery spin on rollers / easy short commutes
      • Tuesday: extended commutes and evening crit at Salt Ayre
      • Wednesday: Ideally that's supposed to be a day for steady long ride day but work will dictate otherwise. So it's all be about steady longer commutes (1h+) and a cheeky lunchtime ride.
      • Thursday: slightly extended commute tempo, evening chaingang / Club TT or Evening Crit
      • Friday: rest day / easy spin short commute.
      • Saturday: Coach at CogSet / Cheeky leg spinner early afternoon.
      • Sunday: RACE

I'll report at the end of the season if that has worked for me ;-)

      Calm before the storm

      • Autopost

After John's philosophical outlook on training through January and February and the importance of base training, it's my turn to do a personal blog. Training through the dark, cold winter months has come and gone. Looking back I have kept it simple. Steady miles whenever I could. introducing intensity only very recently. I am reasonably happy with where I am fitness wise at the moment. The inevitable Cold/Flu got caught around Christmas and New Year leaving me well rested to start 2011 fresh.

So... here we are, only seven days away until the first race. CDNW Saighton. A rolling course with a 1 in 10 drag*. Bike should be ready by then. The Biketreks Racing Team Kit won't be ready for another few weeks - but so is the story for many new teams and until then John, Kieren and I will be racing under neutral colours. British Cycling Racing Licence has yet to come through.

Training plan is still ticking along nicely. Psychologically, I am feeling quietly confident.  A nice routine has been instated. I have thoroughly enjoyed the build up, the long hours in the rain, wind and sometimes sunshine, feeling stronger and fitter than I probably have ever been but somehow it's just that... just training. The calm before the storm.

      Nic

      * Rolling course? Not really. Pancake flat with a couple of short and not steep climbs.

Coal Road Challenge 2011: To chase or be chased?

This Sunday saw the 4th Edition of the Lune Racing Cycling Club’s reliability ride, the Coal Road Challenge. Reliability rides have been a traditional fixture of cycling clubs for many decades offering an opportunity to test the cyclist’s equipment and body before the road racing season starts in anger.

The format of the Coal Road Challenge introduced by Brian Greenwood involved a staggered start of three categorised groups departing at 8:30am
for club riders, cyclotourists and beginner cyclists, 9:05am for faster club riders, cyclosportive riders and racers and finally the 9:20am "scratch group" for Cat 3 racers and above. This offers an interesting challenge, with riders either aiming to arrive back at base first without being caught or for the last group off to catch all riders out in front of them. Whilst not billed as a a race there was a palpable competitive vibe amongst each group.
Was it better to be the chased or chaser?
