Jake Cowen reports from his 1st races with Biketreks Racing Team

Having only joined Biketreks Racing Team on Monday of last week I was eager to get racing. My first race for the team was at Salt Ayre, where the pace was noticeably higher than the past few weeks, due to other teammates doing lots of work. I finished comfortably within the group but feel that I could have done better if I had got into a good position. My next race came two days later at Preston circuit, with elites, cat 1’s, 2’s, 3’s and 4’s all racing together the pace was high, the turn up was not as high as usual due to the rain. The race kept a constant pace throughout and I felt strong going into the final lap, as the last straight came before the end, riders were trying to get to the front and there was a crash taking around 8 down. Luckily I avoided this and got round them on the grass, to contest the sprint for 4th which I just managed to clinch.

      Great Budworth

With this race being only my 3rd road event and having got a puncture in my first I wasn’t really sure what to expect. At the start line it was wet, windy and very cold I wouldn’t exactly say I was looking forward to it.

Racing didn't quite go according to plan for the Biketreks Racing Team this past week-end despite some good legs and strong motivation in the team. Punctures whilst in an eventual winning break, missed breaks and even mechanicals lead to a blank slate at Sloan Trophy, Bolton By Bowland and Aughton Road Race. Good days / Bad days as says James.

Team was out in numbers yesterday at Salt Ayre. The team showed good attitude during the whole 1h+5 laps with riders either up the road or chasing attacks. The team is starting to find its feet on how it rides and impacts on races. Not a bad night by any mean with James Dunlop getting 4th and Chris Anderson 6th in the bunch sprint but still short of what the team is capable of. (Link on VeloUK).

Tuesday also saw the first race for new recruit Jake Cowen, Keen and talented 1st year Junior from Carlisle. We are all looking forward to support and see Jake develop as a rider. He's going to be a strong addition to our junior squad joining Connor Furness and Callum Young. Welcome Jake!

In the mean time, Gary Spencely is continuing his End to End for the local charity Alice's Escapes. (Link)

Conclusion to the Salt Ayre Season

Last night, 23rd of August, saw the last Salt Ayre circuit race of 2011. Classed as a regional C+ it attracted  Elites and Cat 1/2/3/4 riders. The race was won by Jack Pullar (Vanillabikes.com). Kieren Banlin of the Biketreks racing team raced well in the winning break of that went away straight from the gun to cross the line in 7th place. Well done to all competitors and many thanks to the Salt Ayre Cycling Association, Neville Pearson, Tony Sweeney, Kay Atkinson, Carmen Jackson & many others for organising this crit series. Thanks to Kevin at Vanillabikes for sponsoring the series. We are very privileged to have a buoyant and safe racing enviroment at our doorstep.

To top it all, the team's performances have been consistently good throughout. Gary Spencely and Chris Anderson finishing 7th and 13th respectively in the Senior league. Even more satisfying has been to see how quickly the team gelled together to race coherently from very early on in the year.

......try, try again. That's been my motto throughout the season when racing at the Salt Ayre crits. I'm no sprinter and have mainly approached these races as high speed training - preparing me for the hillier road races at the weekends. More recently I have tried to get away in a break and last week I was in a 4 man break that looked like it was going to stay away, unfortunately on the last bend of the last lap we were caught FRUSTRATING. This week, I made 3 attempts to get away in breaks made up of various riders, 3rd time lucky and the break of 3 stuck with me getting 3rd on the line (all the 3's!). This has given me another 10 BC points to bring me to only 9 points off achieving my 2nd Cat licence - now, can I get them in the 2 remaining road races before the end of the season?...........

      Johnny Dodgin.

Beautiful summer evening to be racing. John got close to make it stick going in a break that unfortunately got caught with just one lap to go. After a short hiatus of a couple of weeks because of a mechanical Gaz was racing again. Thanks to Specialized and everyone at Biketreks for sorting out a replacement Tarmac S-Works and putting it together in no time at all.

      Splendid.

As for me, it was great to be back racing at Salt Ayre. It was fun!

Gary initiates an attack (more photos)

Good display by Gaz and Chris at Salt Ayre yesterday. A forecast of heavy rain attracted a slightly depleted field of 35-odd riders. Thankfully, the forecast does not make the weather and a pleasant evening greeted Youth and Senior riders.

The Senior race concluded with an impressive solo victory by Matt Jones who managed the perfect escape with 2 laps to go countering after the bunch managed to get Team Wallis's Steve Abbott back in the fold. Biketreks RT's Gaz won the bunch sprint with Chris finishing not far behind.

With two riders in the Top 5 in 2nd and 5th places, we can safely say this was another good evening at Salt Ayre for the Biketreks Racing Team.

One of the early attacks by Chris who was active thoughout the race. (more photos)

The 7th event in the series was characterised by a dry but very windy evening. Once again the team approached the race with some offensive riding from the four-strong team featuring John, Gaz, Chris and Nic. Results did not turn out as we'd hoped tonight but there are many positives to take from tonight most notably the attittude on display right from the start. We're already looking forward to making amends in the 8th event next Tuesday o get the right result!

A good win by Sam Jackson (Herbalife-Wheelbase) - Results

It has become apparent that Tuesday crits have become place and time to take stock on the team activity and plans. On this particular occasion it was also an opportunity to distribute some of the products provided by our sponsors between team riders, including the very morish Clif Bar Builder recovery protein bars and new sponsor's chamois cream UdderlySmooth!
