More from Chris Anderson riding around the Dolomites.  (Part 1: HERE)

      Day2

      Canazei/Passo de Sella,/Passo Gardena/Passo Campolongo/ Passo pordoi/Canezai

The shortest ride of the three options of the sportif Maratona dles Dolomiti, is a 40miler taking in no less than four passes & 1780m of climbing., this ride is either up or down with no flat between & not as easy as you would think. As we are stopping in Camiptello De Fassa we ride up and  start the ride from Canezei which means you take in all the Passo Sella,if you rode the sportif version you would join the Sella half way up at hairpin No13 after descending from the Pordoi. We have ridden this before ( 3 yrs ago) the other way round , doing the Pordoi first but decided to do it the same way as the sportif.

For anyone thinking of going to the Italian Dolomites, here is a rough guide to some of the passes/climbs done either from one or both sides. All rides were done in July/Aug 2011 with the weather being very changeable up to 26 degrees in the valleys down to 13 degrees on the tops arm /leg warmers and a cape are a must. I rode on my S-WORKS SL3 with a 38 inner chainring and a 25 rear sprocket, while the wife ( Lynsey) used a compact with a 27 on the rear. Most climbs were fine on this except for the Fedaia which has 15% sections & a max of 18% so would suggest a 27 rear.

Lake district cycling at its best

Lancaster-based Biketreks racing team members, John Dodgin and I rode with our 2nd claim club, Lune RCC, the "Edgar ride", an annual ride celebrating the club's 1st president, Edgar Philips. The Edgar ride follows the route of the "Buttermere Run" and crosses Dunmail Raise, Whinlatter and Honister passes. In those days, 130+ miles on the bike as part of a club run would have been a formality. Nowadays, across the spectrum of racing are shorter and racing cyclists tend to train over shorter distances.

Even in wet and windy conditions like on Sunday, the Lakes are a thing of beauty.  Majestic in good or bad weather. Rides like the Edgar ride really show how lucky we are to live in an area that is at a pedal stroke. and... as matter of fact: long rides rock!

It was good to pop in at Biketreks to say Hi to Andy, Keith and the team. Thanks for the chat and squirt of oil on the chains. Much appreciated. That set us up well for the cycle back to Lancaster.

Easter Week-end was free of racing for the Biketreks Racing Team. That marks a milestone in the racing season with the first part of the season over and done with. We are very pleased to see the team building on strength and starting to accumulate BC points without any week going without any points being gained since the tally was opened at CDNW Old Hutton.
